2. Mr. Ami Rastas

Mr Ami Rastas ( born on October 7, 1943 ) received a MS and a Licentiate in Technology in Technical Physics from the Helsinki University of Technology in1968 and 1972, respectively.

Mr rastas worked after his graduation as a research scientist in the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) in the area of reactor physics and technology. He was also the special teacher of reactor technology in the Helsinki University of  Technology.

Mr Rastas joined Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO) in 1972. TVO operates two boiling water reactor (OL1 & OL2) at Olkiluoto in Finland. TVO is also constructing a pressurized water reactor (OL3) at Olkulioto. His responsibility area in that company has covered engineering, development, licensing, nuclear safety assessment, nuclear waste management programs, quality assurance, training and public information. Mr Rastas retired from the position of the executive vice president ( technical director )  of TVO in the beginning of 2005.

Mr Rastas has been deeply involved in activities to start a new nuclear power plant project in Finland since 1980’s. He was in charge of the preparatory phasesd (environment impact assessment, feasibility studied, licensing, bid inquiry specifications, bid evaluation ) of the OL3 project until the signing of the supply. After his retirement, Mr Rastas has continued to work as a consultant supporting the OL3 project.

Mr Rastas has been in 1995-2004 a vice chairman of Posiva’s Board of Directors. That company is responsible to implement the final repository for spent fuel in Finland.

Mr Rastas has been or is a member in several national and international organizations, like Finish Advisory Committee on Nuclear Energy, Governing Board of WANO – Paris Centre, INPO’s international Participant Advisory Committee, EPRI’s Advanced Nuclear Plant Utility Coordinating Committee , Nordic Owners Group (NOG), Steering Committee for the Energy Division of the Technical Research Centre in Finland.

Mr Rastas has also been a member or a chairman in the steering community of several international development project s for the new reactor types (AP1000, BWR90/BWR90+, ESBWR and SWR 1000)

After his retirement from TVO, Mr Rastas has been acting as an independent consultant. Among other things, he has had several consulting tasks for IAEA.

 

3. Dr. Charles Mc Combie

 

 

An independent strategic and technical advisor to various national and international waste management programmes. For 20 years, he was scientific  and technical director of Nagra, the Swiss Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste. Currently one of his prime responsibilities is as Executive Director of the Arius Association.

He has served on a number of committees advising national and international organizations on radioactive waste management issues. He currently  chairs the International Technical Advisory   Committee of NUMO (the HLW organisation of Japan), is Vice-Chairman of the U.S. National Research Council’s Board on Radioactive Waste Management  (BRWM) and chairs the Nuclear    Advisory Committee of the Swiss Paul Scherrer Institute.                  

Dr. McCombie received a B.Sc. degree in natural philosophy (physics) from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland and a Ph.D. degree in physics (material science) from the University of Bristol, England. He is the author or co-author of more than 150 papers and articles in journals and conference proceedings and many published or commercial technical reports.

 

 

4. Dr. David A. Bradley

 

 

David Bradley is Reader in Radiation and Medical Physics and is the Course   Director of the MSc in Medical Physics. He is Secretary of the International  Radiation Physics Society (IRPS), Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal 'Applied   Radiation and Isotopes' and a member of an Experts Steering Group of the IAEA   for the project 'Strengthening Medical Physics through Education and Training'.
Dr Bradley is the author of over 100 publications and has made more than 100             presentations at conferences.

Dr Bradley has active research interests in the fundamentals and applications of photon scattering, radioanalytical techniques for determination of trace element concentrations, radiological risks associated with Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM), the development of synchrotron techniques for characterisation of media, predominantly biological tissues, radiation effects on tissues, and development of silica based luminesence dosimeters.
Research projects of current interest include: the localisation of Zn and Sr in synovial joints, the development of doped radiosensitive glass, the effects of ionizing radiation on extracellular matrix, and near-edge elastic photon scattering from dilute aqueous ions.

6. Ambass. John Ritch

 

 

Ambassador John Ritch is Director General of the World Nuclear Association (WNA), a position he assumed in 2001. For the previous seven years he was American ambassador to the United Nations Organizations in Vienna, including the IAEA. While in Vienna, Ambassador Ritch focused primarily on strengthening worldwide safeguards against nuclear weapons proliferation and on the nuclear crises with Iraq and North Korea.

     

John Ritch began his career as an Army officer, serving on the DMZ in Korea and in the Pentagon. In 1972 he joined the staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, chaired by Senator J. William Fulbright. Ritch served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for 22 years as senior advisor on East-West relations, NATO affairs and nuclear arms control. Ambassador Ritch is a 1965 graduate of West Point, where he was an academic All-American basketball player. He holds an M.A. in politics, philosophy and economics from Oxford University, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar.

8. Dr. Le Van Hong

Dr. Le Van Hong graduated the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (Former Soviet Union) in 1975 and received PhD degree at Slovak Technical University (Former Czechoslovakia) in 1990.

Dr. Hong began his career as a researcher at Nuclear Research Institute in Hanoi in 1977. He was promoted to the Deputy Head of Nuclear Power Department in 1991 and Director of Nuclear Power Center (Former Nuclear Power Department) in 1995.

From Feb. 2002, he is Vice-Chairman of VAEC.

His major field of the study is: Nuclear Power Program Planning; Reactor Technology and Nuclear Safety.

 

9. Mr. Yuri A. Sokolov

 

 

A graduate of Moscow University, he began his scientific career in 1971 at the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow, where he became a Candidate of Science and Doctor of Science in 1980 and 1996 respectively. He has worked in the fields of plasma physics and fusion, engineering design of fusion facilities and thermonuclear reactors. Since 1988 he has been active in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), firstly, as a member of the ITER Managing Committee, leading the Russian team of physicists and engineers, and, later, as the Russian representative on many ITER-related inter-governmental boards, which supervised and promoted the work of ITER.

In 1996, he was appointed Head of the Department of Science and Technology at the Ministry of the Russian Federation for Atomic Energy. In this post, as well as fundamental nuclear science, he was also responsible for nuclear power strategy development in the Russian Federation and for innovation across the full spectrum of fuel cycle and waste management technologies. He has initiated several nuclear knowledge preservation activities in the Russian Federation, some of which are linked to Agency activities in this area.

Mr. Sokolov has served as a member of the Scientific and Technical Council of Minatom in the Russian Federation and on various national and international committees for science and technology, on the editorial boards of scientific journals, on bilateral committees for scientific cooperation, etc.

In October 2003, Mr. Sokolov joined the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna as Deputy Director General, Head of the Department of Nuclear Energy.

11. Dr. Srikumar Banerjee

 

 

Dr S. Banerjee is internationally well known for his work in the field of physical metallurgy and materials science. He has contributed extensively in the basic research on metallurgy of zirconium and titanium based alloys and their applications in the development of thermo-mechanical treatments for processing several nuclear reactor components. His work provides a basis for analysing the radiation stability of structural materials in nuclear reactors.  

The contributions of Dr Banerjee and his colleagues with regard to the development of shape memory alloys and their applications in heat shrinkable couplings are finding extensive applications in the light combat aircraft project. An Distinguished Scientist, Dr Banerjee has been the recipient of many awards and honours. These include Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Engineering Sciences (1989), G.D. Birla Gold Medal of the Indian Institute of Metals (1997), INSA Prize for Materials Science (2001) and Indian Nuclear Society Award (2003). Notable among the international awards received by him are Acta Metallurgica Outstanding Paper Award (1984) and Humboldt Research Award (2004).  

Dr Banerjee is a Fellow of Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences.

 

12. Prof. Dato' Dr.Noramly Muslim

 

 

 

Dato' Dr. Noramly Muslim, a well-known academician, administrator and thinker, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree in Physics. He was one of the pioneer academics and administrators at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Dato' Dr. Noramly has numerous nationally and internationally recognised publications, including a large number of reports and scientific papers. Being the Chairman of Atomic Energy Licensing Board of Malaysia, an adjunct professor of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and a visiting professor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah, he is still an active researcher and scientist.

 

13. Dato' Pian Sukro

 

 

 

Dato’ Ir Pian Bin Sukro is the Chairman & CEO,Energy Commission, Malaysia.

Dato’ Pian also sits on the Boards of the Malaysian Atomic Energy Licensing Board, Malaysian Standards & Accreditation Council, Energy Council of Malaysia, Dataprep Holdings Bhd., Solsis Sdn Bhd, East Asia Pacific Infrastructure Regulatory Forum.

Trained as an engineer, he holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) degree and a M.Sc. in Project Analysis, Finance and Investment.

While with the Energy Commission (EC), he has restructured it to be more focus on its statutory core functions; undertook a comprehensive capacity building program for its staffs; proposed detailed amendments of the Electricity Supply Act of 1990, and resolve industry disputes. He has also assisted the Government in resolving some of the industry challenges including revision of the Peninsular electricity tariffs; renegotiation of existing power purchase agreements; resolving natural gas pricing and supply issues; development of Bakun hydroelectric project and its power transfer to the Peninsular.

He was the President and CEO of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) until June 2004. He has also undertaken various functions for other groups and organizations including the Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia, ASEAN Energy Cooperation, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), World Energy Council, International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE), Asian Development Bank and the World Bank (IBRD).

During his 34 years of service with TNB, he held positions covering the full spectrum of the power utility business. This includes equipment manufacture and installation; power station operation and maintenance; project construction and commissioning; project engineering and management; nuclear power planning and siting studies; project appraisals and feasibility studies; power system development planning; fuel procurement; energy pricing and formulation of electricity tariff; ASEAN inter-utility cooperation; North-East and South-East Asian Utility cooperation; ASEAN energy cooperation; managing implementation of thermal generation projects; corporate, financial and strategy planning; corporatisation of NEB to TNB; privatization of TNB; industry regulation; introduction of independent power producers; power purchase agreements; corporate restructuring and formation of subsidiaries, sourcing of project and corporate funds (local and international); formation of joint ventures and JV companies; development and diversification of TNB’s business locally and overseas.   

 

14. Dr. Somporn Chongkurm

 

 

Mr Somporn Chongkum, a graduate from the Chiangmai University, obtained diploma and M.Eng. degree from the Chulalongkorm Unviersity in Bangkok and earned PhD degree at the Karlsruhe University in Germany in 1987 in nuclear physics. He was the Deputy Secretary General of OAP before apponted as the new Director of TINT.

16. Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Tajuddin Bin Ali

 

Dato' Dr. Ahmad Tajuddin Ali hails from Perlis (Malaysia) and he is currently the Director General of SIRIM, a post he has held since May 1989.

He received his B.Sc. (Eng.) First Class Honours from King's College, University of London in 1973 and his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from Queen Mary College, University of London in 1977. Upon his return, Dato' Dr. Tajuddin briefly served the then National Electricity Board as an Assistant Engineer before being seconded to the Tun Ismail Atomic Research Centre (PUSPATI, now known as MINT) as a Senior Research Officer. From 1983 to 1989 he was Deputy Director General of the Nuclear Energy Unit (UTN, now known as MINT). During the period from February 1985 to August l988 he took leave from UTN to serve as Field Expert with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Dato' Dr. Tajuddin is involved in many professional activities, boards, councils, and committees at national, regional, and international levels. Currently among others he is: Member of the Governing Council Malaysian Academy or Science; Member, National Council for Scientific Research and Development; Member of the Board of Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad; Member of the Board of Composite Technology Research Malaysia; Chairman, SIRIM-SIME Technologies Sdn. Bhd.; Chairman, Malaysian Technology Consultants Sdn. Bhd.; President, Malaysian Association of Research Scientists. Currently Dato' Dr Tajuddin is also a member of the Governing Council of the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO).

Dato' Dr. Tajuddin, a graduate of the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Programme, is acknowledged for his strategic planning, management and marketing skills. He has been invited to speak on many occasions particularly on the subject of Quality and on Strategic Planning and R&D Management.

Dato' Dr. Tajuddin is also a Professional Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers and a Foundation Fellow of the Malaysian Academy of Science. He was awarded the Dato' Paduka Maharaja Perlis by the Raja of Perlis in 1993 and the JMN and AMN Federal Honours for his contributions to date.
