Digital Industrial Radiography

Digital Industrial Radiography (DIR) is a dedicated electronic system that enables X-ray images of products under examination to be generated and displayed on a Radiography Image display monitor. The advancement of computer technology and image processing helps to revolutionize the conventional industrial radiography to digital technology. In general, the DIR technology can be classified into 3 main categories i.e. Film Digitization, Computer Radiography and Flat Panel or semiconductor device technology.   However, the progress of DIR technology depending on several activities such as system qualification an according to industrial practice, qualification certification personnel, data standardization & management and also include hardware development.

To develop Digital Radiography Technology for Non-destructive Testing (NDT) Services in Malaysian industries, NDT Group has carried several activities through local & National fund plus the IAEA contribution through MAL/TC/8/021- Establishment of Digital Industrial Radiography(DIR) procedures and protocols for SME project. The activities include the development of film digitization procedures to help local small industries to covert the film to digital radiographic images an according to accepted standards. Secondly, an extensive study on the evaluation of imaging performance for Digital Radiography system such as signal to noise ratio, spatial resolution, noise assessments and calibration using DIR standards accessories and references have been made before the system put in practice. Apart of the that the development a low cost Mobile Radioscopy System for Industrial Inspection (MDRS) system that suitable for SME industries to inspect a light alloys casting and also as “training kits” for technical and vocational institute to undergo DIR training. The system developed has been qualified for Class A radiographic test in accordance to ISO/DIS 1763.
